Group of students engaged in a table game. The page title is Supporting and Donating to BNS.

Your contributions and donations to the Brooklyn New School provide hundreds of Brooklyn children with academically rigorous, hands-on educational experiences that kindle their innate curiosity, teach them to continue asking questions, and inspire lifelong learning. Thank you for your support.

The Annual Appeal

Government funding to NYC public schools is not sufficient to cover costs such as science and arts education, or even basic supplies like books. The PTA will cover an additional $500 per student this school year, with an overall budget goal of $240,000. Your tax-deductible donation to BNS provides children with hands-on educational experiences that kindle curiosity and inspire life-long learning.

Please donate at whatever level works for your family—no amount is too small. If you’re able to contribute at a higher level, please consider donating for children outside your family. We are grateful for the unique way in which every family contributes to our community! Your contribution to The Brooklyn New School supports an economically and racially diverse community in which children and adults learn to take care of each other and our environment.

Your donation means everything

The following BNS projects are made possible solely by your support:

Outdoor and Environmental Education: Students extend their classrooms into the outdoors, exploring and studying the natural world in the Pre-K’s Nature Around Us program, and Kindergarten’s Shore School. Upper grades collect water samples from the Hudson River and Gowanus Canal, and study the effects of pollution on our ecosystems. Students learn Earth Living Skills—traditional and sustainable ways of living with the earth.

Performing Arts: Students work with dedicated teaching artists from the Brooklyn Arts Exchange, learning dance, theater, and music skills that develop their talents, leadership, self-awareness, and self-confidence. Every year, the 4th grade develops and produces an original, full-scale musical. In recent years the 5th grade has been creating theater through the Interrupting Bigotry curriculum.

Farming, Science and Sustainability: The BNS schoolyard—once a parking lot—is an urban farm where students grow crops like herbs, okra, eggplant, and lettuce. The yard holds a pollinator habitat for butterflies; a worm composting station where much of the school’s compost is processed; and a home for three hens. 1st graders learn to harvest in the Autumn, put the farm to rest for the Winter, and plant and tend in the Spring. They make pickled carrots and vegetable soup to share with their classmates.

Reading: BNS inspires confident and enthusiastic readers with the extra support of library staff and reading intervention specialists. Students visit our school library every week, browse and borrow books, and engage in theme-based reading curriculum focused on questions like, “How are you making our world a better place?”
